Why Attachment-Focused EMDR Might Be the Answer for Your High Functioning Anxiety

From An Attachment-Focused EMDR Therapist Who Has Lived It

From the outside, it probably looks like you're doing just fine.

You're successful at work. You're dependable. You show up for the people you love. You get things done.

But inside? Your mind never really stops.

You're replaying conversations, overthinking decisions, spiraling before presentations, and carrying the weight of everyone else's emotions. You hold yourself to impossible standards and somehow still wonder if you're doing enough.

If this sounds familiar, you're not alone.

High-functioning anxiety is real, and because you're still functioning, it's often overlooked. People see your accomplishments, not the anxiety that's fueling them. Over time, living this way can lead to burnout, overwhelm, relationship stress, and the feeling that you're constantly surviving instead of actually enjoying your life.

The good news is that it doesn't have to stay this way.

Why Trying Harder Isn't the Answer

If you have high-functioning anxiety, you've probably already tried all the "right things."

You've read the books. You've listened to the podcasts. You've practiced deep breathing, gone to yoga, taken the baths, booked the massage, maybe even been to therapy before.

Those things can absolutely help, but if you're anything like the women I work with, you've probably found yourself wondering:

"Why am I still so anxious?"

Because what you need isn't another self-care routine.

You need relief.

You want to stop overthinking every interaction with a friend. You want to stop feeling sick before every presentation, even though you've prepared more than enough. You want to stop believing that if you just work a little harder, finally get everything done, or make everyone happy, you'll eventually be able to relax.

The truth is, anxiety isn't usually asking you to try harder. It's asking to be understood.

When Coping Skills Aren't Enough

Maybe you've been in anxiety therapy before and you've learned some really helpful coping skills. Those tools matter, and I encourage my clients to keep using them.

But there often comes a point where you realize you don't just want to manage your anxiety anymore, you want to heal it.

Because constantly coping isn't sustainable.

While you're doing that deeper work, here are a few ways to support yourself when anxiety gets triggered at work, at home, or in your relationships:

  • Pause before assuming the worst. Ask yourself, "Is this happening right now, or does my nervous system just think it is?"

  • Notice when you're taking responsibility for someone else's emotions. Their feelings don't automatically mean you've done something wrong.

  • Bring yourself back into your body. Put your feet on the ground, take a long exhale, look around the room, and remind yourself that you're here, not back in an old experience.

  • Practice "good enough." Perfection isn't what makes you worthy, even if your anxiety tells you otherwise.

These aren't meant to make your anxiety disappear. They're meant to help you find a little more steadiness until we can get to the root of what's keeping it there.

How Attachment-Focused EMDR Therapy Helps

One of the biggest misconceptions about trauma is that it has to be one big event.

For many women with high-functioning anxiety, that's simply not true.

More often, the anxiety has been shaped by years of subtle experiences that taught you to stay hyper-aware, put your own needs aside, or become the responsible one. Maybe you learned that keeping everyone else happy helped you feel safe. Maybe there wasn't room for your emotions, so you became really good at ignoring them.

As Alice Miller writes in The Drama of the Gifted Child, many children learn to disconnect from themselves in order to maintain connection with the people they depend on. They become experts at reading everyone else while losing touch with what they need.

That pattern doesn't disappear just because you become an adult. It often shows up as perfectionism, people-pleasing, overthinking, and the constant feeling that you have to hold everything together.

This is where attachment-focused EMDR therapy can be so powerful.

Rather than only talking about your anxiety, EMDR helps your brain and nervous system process the experiences that created these patterns in the first place. We aren't just managing symptoms, we're helping your nervous system learn that it doesn't have to stay on high alert anymore.

Depending on your needs, I may also integrate Brainspotting, the Flash Technique, or Deep Brain Reorienting to support this work in a way that feels gentle and manageable.

My goal isn't to help you become someone who never feels anxious. It's to help you spend less of your life controlled by anxiety and more of it feeling calm, grounded, connected, and free to be yourself.

You Don't Have to Keep Living in Survival Mode

If you're tired of looking like you have it all together while quietly struggling on the inside, know that things really can get better.

You don't have to keep coping forever. Healing is possible.

If you're looking for therapy for women who are ready to move beyond managing symptoms and finally get to the root of their high-functioning anxiety, attachment-focused EMDR therapy may be the next step.

I'd love to help you explore what that could look like.
